Here’s Hoping 2009 Will Be Better Than This Year

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, and I’m raising a glass to my friends today because I’ll be conspicuously absent tomorrow. I still can’t believe how quickly this year has flown by. It seems like only yesterday I was writing the word “January” in the space where I date my checks.

This year I’ve seen my nest emptied and partially refilled. I’ve seen my retirement go down in flames. I’ve seen business take a nasty turn for the worse. I’ve seen my house lose approximately 60% of its value since 2005.

I don’t like to think I am negative, but that I’m a realist. I can’t see where things will get better, not yet, anyway. That’s because I really don’t think we’ve hit bottom yet. When that happens, it will be a life altering event. I’ve seen lives mildly changed but none altered. We’re like the well to do yet clueless voyagers on the Titanic, still drinking and dancing while the ship sinks.

It’s hard to keep my mind on anything positive, but I’m doing my level best. Still, 2009 looms large, like a thunderhead cloud ready to spill downward into a class 5 tornado. All I can do is hang on for the ride. That’s why I will uncork a couple of bottles of Mumm tomorrow night and toast the passage of time and drown my sorrows in the same swig.

Oh, well. There’s one more thing I can do.

There’s always praying for the lottery.

  1. Hey, Mega Millions is $37 mil. Wanna go halvsies?

  2. I keep reminding myself, everyday, that God is in control, and just because I can’t see the way through doesn’t mean He can’t.

I do think it’s going to get ugly, very ugly for some folks. The food pantry is fully stocked, just in case.

  3. Enjoy your Mumm.

I like the Titanic analogy. Like them, we have little that we can do. We can only wait for the life rafts and hope they come.

I don’t know why I am more optimistic than most. Must be because I don’t have anything to lose.

  4. We don’t get to pick what happens, we only get to pick how we deal with it. 🙂 Hang in there, Pan.

  5. Oh — and when the hangover dissipates? WRITE. 😉

  6. Yay!! The little cat is back!

  7. Oh, the Little Nagging Cat returns! 🙂 I took yesterday off from writing, but I managed to work out (resolution again) and make so much jewelry. Writing commences again this afternoon.

  8. All the best, Pan, for 2009. Things can only get better.

  9. In many ways we had a similar year. Maybe I’m in the bluegrass band equivalent of the Titanic orchestra, but if I’ve got my people and my music I can get by.

  10. Unrelated to the thread — thank you for the mail — what a nice surprise. Your son’s recital program is a great combination of pieces, and I look forward to watching/hearing it.

  11. Happy 2009 Pan!

Stock up on cans of spam (if you can’t bear to eat them – and I know I couldn’t – then you can always use them to repel looters when the Apocalypse comes) and change the locks in case the kids come back…

    😉

  12. Thanks, Dr. B. I think this year will be banner for you.

David, please feel free to give an unbiased review! I thought you might enjoy that.

Truce… I grew up on Spam, and I know I might have to go back to my roots… But did you notice? Spam now comes with an expiration date!
