I must be feeling extraordinarily generous, because I signed up to make something for David’s bake sale, and here Random Name has then signed me up to do the signing up of others who are interested.
I signed up for the “bake sale” for several reasons:
1. I don’t do “jumble” sales anymore (i.e. garage sales). It’s so much easier to put something on Craigslist.
2. I don’t do brain surgery. I get queasy looking at a paper cut.
3. I am currently “taken” so I can’t fulfill the need for David to have a steady girlfriend. (I’m also half nuts, so that puts me out of the girlfriend running. David needs a sane girlfriend.)
4. I can’t offer David a career. I am 2,000 miles away from him, give or take a couple hundred, and besides, if I were to win the lottery today, I’d move closer to him in a heartbeat. (Not because I’d want to be closer to HIM, per se, but because I would want to be on that side of the country.)
Baking is not my strong suit, although I have made a chocolate cake from scratch. It was incredibly yummy. On occasion, I will make blueberry muffins. I like blueberry muffins, but find the ones for sale at retail establishments huge and unwieldy, much like monster SUVs. I’m a Prius kind of a gal, and my muffins are small yet delectable.
For my bake sale contribution, I was thinking of taking a wedge of Humboldt Fog cheese and baking it to gooeyness, then topping it with some sauteed shitake mushrooms. This is to be served with crostini. I was lucky enough to have this dish while I was in San Diego, and I tried it on my husband, the Dear Mr. Demonic, last night. He pronounced it the best appetizer he ever had. (Of course, he says that everything I make is the best [insert dish] he has ever had.)
I’ve never done a virtual bake sale, but I imagine it is much the same as Real Life Bake Sale. You round up people to bake things and then sell them to the highest bidder.
I hope that a lot of you will sign up. Don’t be shy if you cannot bake anything. We will take donations from Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Walmart Superstores, Piggly Wiggly, Food Lion and Publix, as long as they are baked.
